Securing Nigerian Communities (SNC) is a Department of State-funded project designed to increase access to information, equip key stakeholders with practical violence reduction tools, and forge new social connections across conflicting groups, while addressing the systemic inequities that present barriers to human security.
In recent months, in the heart of Jos South Local Government Area (LGA), the EAI-led Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) initiative has emerged as a cornerstone of community resilience amidst escalating tensions in Nigeria. The issue unfolded when a Muslim youth from the Bukuru Community was apprehended for theft by members of the Hunters Association of Nigeria, a local community policing structure. The Hunters Association reportedly tortured the youth until he was unconscious. Then Muslim youths from that community subsequently mobilized a protest, posing a threat to inter-communal harmony along religious lines.
At this pivotal moment, EWER members exhibited exceptional leadership and collaboration. Acknowledging the urgency of the situation, they promptly engaged with community leaders, security personnel, and stakeholders from various backgrounds, including representatives from both Islamic and Christian leadership groups. Through deliberate dialogue and mediation efforts, EWER members successfully alleviated tensions and pacified the protesters, thus preventing a potential crisis.
The impact of the EWER structure’s proactive intervention extended beyond mere conflict resolution. It also facilitated immediate medical attention for the tortured individual and arranged the arrest of the responsible Hunters’ Association personnel by the police. This decisive action not only ensured justice but also fostered trust between communities and law enforcement agencies, nurturing a sense of security and unity.
